Kindling boxes, also known as nest boxes, are placed into a doe’s cage a few days before she is due to kindle, that is, have a litter of baby rabbits known as kits. We placed Snowy’s box in her hutch with some hay inside the kindling box and plenty just outside. She got very busy building her nest hopping in with mouthfuls of hay and lining her nest in preparation for the kits. Our kindling boxes are made of untreated plywood with wire mesh on the base and made to the right dimensions. We have a lift up hinged lid which works well give the doe security.
